How to care for a kitten at home

If it seems to you that you know everything about kittens, all the same basic recommendations on how to care for a kitten will be useful to those who have already dealt with a cat tribe, and those who first got a kitten.

What to meet with a kitten

English folk wisdom says that according to the cat, all things belong to cats. There is a grain of truth in this statement. But still, before you bring the kitten, you need to purchase several things that will belong exclusively to your future "relative". So - a small memo "How to care for a cat or cat and what should be bought by the time the kitten appears in the house."

Nobody canceled their natural needs and hardly anyone wants a kitten to relieve themselves in an apartment, in a secret corner. For street cats, of course, comfort is unknown, but for domestic kittens (and especially their owners) the correct cat tray is necessary in the first place.

In short, there are three types of trays:

  • closed (the so-called euro toilet);
  • open with filler;
  • open without filler with a grill;

The first (closed) - aesthetic, but expensive. For this type of tray, you need a gel or silica gel filler to block odor. The advantages of this type of tray are obvious - it's backstage, neatness and a pleasant appearance. Of the minuses, it is necessary to note the large size of the toilet, for which there simply may not be room in the house!

An open type of tray with a filler is the most common and, perhaps, convenient for apartments and for a four-legged baby. Recommendations of "experienced" are unanimous in that you do not need to buy a small tray for a kitten. Regardless of age, the baby will overcome the high sides and you will save on the constant change of toilets. So immediately buy a tray "for growth", especially since any fillers are suitable for this type and they are very easy to disinfect.

Tips for buying a tray without a filler with a grill are addressed to those who are constantly at home and can often rinse the grid and the tray itself. Flush the toilet from time to time with special products containing chlorine, and may the smell and a happy kitten come with you!

There are also special trays for teaching a kitten to a human toilet.

Read how to teach a kitten to the toilet.

In the video, you can learn the general rules for those who do not mind sharing a “white friend” with their animal:

Toilet filler

The contents of the kitten will be comfortable for both of you, if the filler for the toilet will be to the kitten's taste, in a figurative, of course, sense. Although, watching a monthly kitten, you will find that he will probably try the filler on the tooth.

Fillers come in three types:

  • locking;
  • clumping;
  • absorbent.

The instinct of instillation, laid down by nature in a kitten, should be realized at the moment when he “powdered the nose”. Therefore, do not spare the filler, let the baby accumulate enough and, therefore, enjoy the trip to the toilet.

The most economical are locking fillers. Such a filler is poured in large quantities into the tray, moisture flows down through the granules and is absorbed only in the lowest layer. The upper layers remain clean and do not allow the smell to spread. When most of the surface turns yellow - the filler is refreshed.

Clumping filler dissolves with moisture, forming rounded lumps. They are removed with a special screening paddle, the filler is sprinkled as necessary.

Absorbent fillers are the most inexpensive and environmentally friendly. They are made mainly of sawdust, paper, etc. It can also be removed in parts, as it becomes soiled.

A set of Saxon porcelain, even if it continues to stand in the sideboard, as the memory of great-grandmother - for a kitten you need to purchase only three bowls in advance (by the way, you can also have porcelain bowls). One bowl is needed for water. It should be as stable as possible. The other two are for dry food and liquid food. Bowls should be easy to clean and comfortable for the kitten.

Scratching post

If you do not get a scratching post or postpone this purchase until later, then you will have to buy a new sofa or leather corner in the kitchen. And it’s not about cat harm! Cats, cats, kittens don't just sharpen their claws. This ritual is an exercise for them, without which the animal does not feel comfortable. There will be no scratching post - the baby will replace it with furniture or wallpaper. From the first day, bring the baby to a special column or even a complex wrapped with sisal thread, and show what to do with this happiness kitten.

To consolidate the effect, spray the claw with liquid catnip, so attractive to cats.

A little patience in the end will save your furniture and nerves! Try to make a cat scratching post with your own hands according to the video instructions.

Yes, on the dressing table of a decent kitten there should be a comb, and it’s better to have several at once - the rule of care for kittens. Of course, in the event that your pet is not a sphinx or a charming levok. Human hair care products for babies do not categorically fit! Plastic combs are not suitable for them, as they strongly electrify the wool.

Optimal metal combers with rare teeth. Very comfortable brushes worn on the hand.

IMPORTANT! Try not to use slipers, better known as slickers! They are needed in preparation for exhibitions, and in the usual, non-exhibition mode, the kitten’s coat from a slicker can be very damaged.

The kid needs toys. Like any baby, a cat child will look for a toy. It can be a golden ring, left out of habit under a mirror or a torn button. Therefore, buy a couple of toys in advance. Balls, fur mice, rattles or feathers on a stick will help the kitten brighten up the first days of separation from a cat mom. Or make toys for cats with your own hands.

Caring for a kitten for 1 month will be quite difficult. Until your patience and love develop the acquired instincts in the kid. This can help ... special sprays! They are frightening or accustoming.

You will need the first ones to protect those places that the cat can damage or to wean it from going to the toilet in the wrong place.

Attracting sprays are good for accustoming to carrying or to a house.

These sprays are completely safe for the animal and very effective!

Newborn kittens were originally engaged in by the breeder. From the moment he gives you the banner of responsibility, you will have to visit your veterinarian regularly. Therefore, carrying is simply necessary. It can be fabric or plastic (depending on the size, temperament of the cat and the geography of transportation). For those who are going on a trip by train or plane, you need a rigid plastic carry, a trip in a car is convenient with a soft carry.

By the way, while the first trip is still looming in perspective, it is convenient to use the carrier as a house for the baby. Put in it a diaper that smells of his first house and the kitten will feel safe to carry.

Toothbrush and toothpaste

Problems with teeth and gums in cats often lead to serious illnesses. The baby's oral cavity needs to be taken care of from a young age. Otherwise, then this procedure will be painful for everyone.

Beef or salmon flavored toothpastes, comfortable brushes should stop possible tooth problems. Caring for a cat that has been accustomed to procedures since infancy is very easy.

Kitten food

Allowed is not prohibited. In fact, this is the basic rule for composing a cat menu. But centuries of the coexistence of humans and cats gave rise to a lot of gastronomic myths. Care and feeding (and especially feeding) is a zone of special responsibility. The approach to nutrition must be scientific - this is the basic rule of care for kittens. The thoroughbred kittens or their not so aristocratic brothers are equally important right menu!

What can not be fed a kitten?

We warn you right away - there are many prohibitions and some of them will surprise you very much. So, for example, we recommend forgetting about such a "popular" milk. The cat’s body simply doesn’t digest it and you’ll often have to remove the products of non-digestion from the tray.

In addition to milk, kittens should not:

  • bones (chicken, fish);
  • pork, goose, duck;
  • sausages, smoked meats, salinity;
  • sweets in any form;
  • potatoes;
  • legumes;
  • fish
  • egg protein;
  • salt, spices.

More information about the prohibitions here.

How to feed a kitten? Natural nutrition

And again, we warn you right away - the food from your table does not fit the kitten. Be prepared for the baby to cook separately. So, what can and should be included in the kitten's diet:

  • raw thawed beef;
  • boiled chicken meat;
  • beef or chicken offal;
  • egg yolk;
  • milk porridge (only for babies up to 3 months);
  • dairy products;
  • cereals;
  • raw or boiled vegetables.

And all this is not salty, warm and, of course, fresh!

Finished feed

Experts believe that ready-made industrial feeds significantly save time for preparing breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack and dinner for a kitten. In addition, they are well balanced and with such a diet you do not need to give the kitten vitamins additionally.

Small animals are fed only with dry ready-made feeds (canned food - exclusively for adults!)

What feed to buy? Those marked with: "Premium" or "Superpremium". Cheap prepared feeds, alas, all too often cause diseases, sometimes incurable.

For kittens you need to buy specialized baby food.

Mixing feeds from different companies is not worth it; such nutrition is no longer considered balanced.

Kitten's diet

At home, it is better to feed the kitten on a schedule. If the baby is 2 months old, then it is fed 5 times a day.

A semi-annual kitten is fed less often, up to 3 times a day.

An 8-month-old kitten is equated to an adult cat and receives food 2 times a day.

Some breeds are prone to fullness, so regularly measure them 90-60-90 and do not overfeed the animal.

Kitten care

How to care for a kitten that no longer falls under the care of a cat and a breeder? You took the baby to your place at the age of three months (the most optimal for separation) and now you are his mother, father and closest relatives. And you need:

Cut kitten claws

This procedure is easiest to do using special scissors. How to cut baby's claws and not cause pain?

If the kitten has white claws, then, having looked closely, you will distinguish a pinkish shade. This pink area should be avoided when cutting nails.

If the claws are black, there is a great danger of injuring the sensitive area. Remove approximately 1 mm of claw. This will be enough to prevent scratching on leather or furniture.

Read more in the article how to cut claws.

Brushing kitten's ears

For some kittens, this procedure is becoming a favorite. Question - why do this? Firstly, to remove dirt. Secondly, for the prevention of ear mites. These tiny insect parasites can live in the ear canals, causing infections and other bad things. We remove them ruthlessly!

Brush your teeth

We wrote about this procedure above. We add only that too often the baby does not need to brush his teeth. Once a month is enough.

Comb out the wool

Wool (if any) should be combed regularly, once or twice a week.

Bathing is contraindicated for some breeds at all, and for others - as it becomes heavily contaminated.

Features of caring for some breeds of kittens

British scottish kittens

Caring for these cats differs from usual in several nuances. Auricles, which should be clean and smelling pleasant, require special attention. Caring for your ears involves removing the tassels, if any, on the ears. And, of course, hair care. The British and Scots are the only shorthair kittens that enjoy combing against the fur. Caring for cats of these breeds includes two combing per week, long and massaging.

The skin, eyes and ears of the sphinxes need your regular help - the basic rules for caring for kittens of these breeds. Sphinxes sweat, so their skin should be wiped with a damp sponge regularly. Hair randomly appearing on the skin must be ruthlessly removed. In addition, it is important to give the sphinxes the opportunity to sunbathe a little (emphasize a little).

Since kittens of this breed do not have eyelashes, their eyes are more often polluted. Tea leaves or special droplets solve this problem.

And the large (add, also very hot) sphinx ears are just a casket for the accumulation of brown secretions. We clean the auricle of the sphinxes at a hint of pollution!

Shorthair cats (Abyssinian, Thai, Exot, Siamese)

These breeds do not require complicated care. Regular cleaning of the ears, teeth and eyes, gentle combing and cleaning of the oral cavity - and the kitten is fine!

Longhair cats (Persians, Maine Coon, Siberian cat)

How to care for a cat so that its hair is of high quality? You will have to run with a tambourine, that is, observe a certain complex ritual. Firstly, arm yourself with an arsenal of combs, and secondly, remember the instructions for caring for a long-haired pet:

  • we collect the fallen hairs with a brush-mitten;
  • comb the wool with a rare comb in the direction of growth;
  • a frequent brush we go through problem areas (stomach, panties);
  • dust the coat. Voila - a kitten can be sent to a beauty contest!

Adaptation kitten

The optimal age for picking up a kitten is 3 months. His immune system is already strong, his intelligence is developing, his appearance is also visible.

How to make your baby take your home as your own? Be prepared to help him with this for the first 3-4 weeks.

On the first day the kitten stays in the house, limit its space to one room. Let him look around, sniff and only after introduce him to the rest of the territory.

Play with a kitten

In games, kittens develop better, they perceive a playmate as their friend, so do not be lazy to spend 15-30 minutes daily playing with a baby. Some kittens are even better at training after. Kids with whom they played in childhood are more cheerful than they gather, which they did not pay attention to.

Friendship with a dog or another adult cat

First you need to introduce the animals. The advantage of a kitten is that it smells of childhood and an adult animal will sooner or later accept it. When you first meet, avoid direct contact. Lock the animals in different rooms, and then swap places. So they get used to each other's smells.

Once again, arrange a "confrontation." If there is no conflict, then consider that friendship will definitely take place.

Kitten and baby

Too small a child can inadvertently hurt a kitten. Therefore, contact should occur under the supervision of an adult. Adult children need to clarify the rules of playing with a kitten. By the way, the latter should also feel the verge of permissible.

Conan the Barbarian or the Destroyer Kitten

"A cat knows how to extricate itself with forgiveness for anything." However, the destruction that suits the baby is not at all small. To prevent damage, you can paste the furniture with double-sided duct tape, put valuable objects to a height inaccessible to the baby, remove flowers and frames with photographs higher.

To limit the passage of the kitten in hard-to-reach places and, as an alternative to cutting the claws, put special tips on the claws.

Kitten Health

Having got a kitten, start listening to word of mouth. It is very important to find YOUR veterinarian! On the advice of friends or reviews on the Internet, it will not be difficult for you to do this. At the first meeting, ask the future family doctor for recommendations on nutrition, options for combating parasites, the first signs of illness and get a schedule of vaccinations and visits to the veterinarian.

Deworming kitten

About 7 days before the first vaccination, deworming should be done. Subsequently, the kittens do this procedure every three months up to one year. It is optimal to use broad-spectrum preparations for the prevention of parasites.

Flea control

Fleas are not jokes. Especially not funny to the little crumbs in whom these parasites are wound. They cause itching, allergies, dermatitis, lead to exhaustion and the development of blood diseases! Did we scare you? There are five types of anti-flea agents: drops, sprays, shampoos, collars, pills. Do not rely on your choice if your pet is still very small, but consult your veterinarian.

IMPORTANT! You need to vaccinate both animals that live in the yard, and those who do not leave the apartment. Both the first and second can equally get sick, so it's better to play it safe.

The first time kittens are vaccinated at the age of 8-9 weeks. In this case, rabies virus-free vaccinations are used.

Revaccination is carried out when the kitten is 12 weeks old. In this complex vaccine, rabies virus is already contained.

The next revaccination takes place already in a year and then every year once.

Scheme may vary slightly. Your vet will suggest the best.

Sterilization / castration of the animal

If you are ready for the kitten, growing up, to begin to “mark” the territory, demand a cat (cat) and regularly “bring in the lap”, then you can not read further. If this prospect does not please you, then let sterilization / castration become the most humane way to solve many future problems.

It is best to castrate a kitten at the age of 9-10 months.

You need to sterilize a cat before the first estrus, this is about 8 months of age.

In conclusion of this chapter, we will tell you about those signs that mean that a cat has started having health problems. So what should you always pay attention to? The reasons to consult a veterinarian are: poor appetite, poor weight gain in a kitten, vomiting, bloating, diarrhea, "current" eyes, pale gums, coughing or shortness of breath, nasal discharge, difficulty urinating.

At first glance, it seems that keeping a kitten is very, very difficult. In fact, this is a very pleasant matter, because the word "content", with the regular implementation of all our recommendations, will disappear from your diet and they will simply become a way of life. And believe me, when the fluffy lump settles on its knees and starts its infinite: "Murrrrrr", you will say that it was worth it!

We recommend reading very good books:

  • Lyudmila Antonova "Care for domestic cats";
  • Elena Filipova "From the point of view of a cat."
